So, I'm finally getting around for the rebuild. Here's what I've got coming:

Buschur Racing Stage 3 head (titanium springs, retainers, full PnP)
JAM solid lifters
Forced Performance 20g-9lt-5 aka FP Green
850cc injectors
Eagle 2.3l stroker kit
Kevlar timing belt
Fluidyne crank damper
UR Clutch

Going with it will be the 280 cams and water/meth I had previously. I should be in the area of 475whp and 525wtq @ 30 psi when all is done. I'll post pics as things come in and during the build stage.

Siiick.

Head studs?
Yes, ARP headstuds.

I'm going with the 20g turbo for 2 reasons:

1. I can reuse the manifold and downpipe that I already have instead of having to pay for a complete kit.
2. Anything bigger will not be as well suited for autox.

Not overkill, I'll be making so much torque down low that I can leave it in 3rd and never have to shift

I should have no trouble decimating you if I go with cheater tires too, possibly 285's.

List of stuff going back in and some pics:

Buschur stage 3 head
20g turbo upgrade
2.3l Eagle STroker kit from ETS
Kevlar timing belt
ARP Studs
GT Spec Manifold
TTP 850cc injectors
JAM lifters
JAM BS removal kit
Fluidampr
Labonte motorsports VCS3G injection system and failsafe

I'll be reusing my GSC 280's in the head and most of everything else I already had.

I'll update this thread with pictures as everything proceeds. For now all I have are pics of my horribly disorganized garage and a million evo pieces.

First stuff that I have received. 2 day turnaround from JAM:

Still waiting for:

Thanks Mike!

Block is back from machine shop. It was tanked, decked, bored and honed for the arias pistons. I put a fresh coat of engine enamel on it. I also put the intake manifold back together with the AP fuel rail and TTP 850cc injectors. Tomorrow I'll be measuring ring gap and finishing the piston assembly.

Nice choices matt. 2.3L and a 20G, I seem to remember recommending that to another guy who used to drive a red EVO and loved to auto-x.

I agree that the 20G with this setup will be DY-NO-MITE. The 280 cams may delay full boost by a couple hundred RPM but once they com on line all will be fogotten.

A couple of ?'s.

What is your redline going to be?
30 psi, on pump and meth or race fuel and meth?

From what I was told the EVO IX's stock turbo was a 20G compressor mated to a 16G turbine. The smaller turbine limited the stock turbos ultimate power numbers. The real 20G turbine section will make far better topend power but how much later do you expect the power to come in even with a 2.3L?

Looks to be a killer street/auto-x beast. Looking forward to the end results. Keep up the good work.

Oh, and as for Noah, he can't drive. Give him 355 R-comps and he'd still spin out ;)

I dont know about Autox beast... fucking 20g is still laggy as hell even mated to a 16g housing...

but meh it will prob rip none-the-less

(btw my deffinition of laggy is: Any... so Laggy as hell i guess is respective ahaha)

mixmastermatt
05-10-2008, 12:08 AM
Tony- I'll be keeping the stock 7600rpm redline since the 20g won't make any more power over 7k anyway. I'll be running 30psi on 93 with 30/70 meth/water via a labonte motorsports touchscreen controller and failsafe. Stock evo 9 turbo is a 42lb/minwith a 10.5 hotside and a 16g compressor wheel and a slightly larger compressor housing than the 16g on the evo 8. The FP Green is true 47lb/min 20g turbo with a 5 blade billet compressor instead of the usual 6 blade.

Rokkit- Lag?? What lag??? :D

Today I measured ring end clearance and measured bearings and journals. Pistons are fully assembled and ready to go in, BUT Eagle sent the wrong set of main bearings. Instead of mains with separate thrust bearings, I got pre-1992 4g63 bearings which were .020" too large. Eagle doesn't know when they will have the right bearings in stock, so I could be waiting for awhile if I can't get some on my own. Here's some pics of me measuring the rings.

Lag is kinda funny to explain. Everyone has a different definition of it because they have different veiws on how severe it really is. A huge turbo will be slow to make full boost at first, but once the larger wheels of the turbo are moving, unless there is a bottle neck or the BOV/BPV is too small, re-spool should be very fast. Large turbos are only laggy if they're turbine A/R is way too big for the engine in question or if the engine is put into a severe load situation in too high of a gear. The turbine wheel of the turbo is a restriction in the exhaust path so if your at too low of a RPM and floor the car the turbo actually hurts your acceleration. So too big is laggy but too small will choke your midrange and topend power.

Now cruising in say 4th gear and nailing the throttle with a large turbo will take some time to build boost. Nailing the throttle from a stand still in first gear isn't nearly as bad. Remember accelerating from a stand still and accelerating while moving are very different. I had an SR55, 55 LBS/minute ball bearing turbo, and the only time it felt laggy was if I was in the upper gears and wanted to accelerate rapidly. There was an easy fix to that problem, speed was just a down shift away.

Rokkit is used to his insta-boost IHI turbo. For a street/ daily driver the turbo is great. They make dependable pump gas power with great drivability. But they are limited by small turbine and compressor housings and very small internal wastegates. If 300 to 350WHP max, for a Subaru, is your goal then the smaller IHI turbos are the way to go. For an EVO the stock turbos can reach 400+WHP from what I have seen on some of the websites which give the EVO owner an advantage when it comes to making reliable power. The EVO doesn't need a turbo change to hit the magic 400WHP mark where the WRX/STI does. It is my opinion that the STI should come with a turbo that is similiar in size to the FP green from the factory, but who am I to question Subaru's reasons for using smaller turbos on their cars.

For Matt's setup he will be in the lower gears most of the time so initial spool and re-spool shouldn't be an issue. The cams will delay the onset of boost a little but once the cams are in their powerband making boost and holding it shouldn't be an issue. The 20G will fit right into what he is try'n to do. Very well thought out build, except maybe for the cams being able to push the powerband higher than Matt intends to go RPM wise. But then who says he's going to stay at this level. The 280 cams may have a GT40R kissing them sometime in the future ;)

UPDATE!

Engine bay is done, engine is done, so tomorrow I'll be lubing it up and slipping it in. Probably be awhile before I actually start it up since someone absconded with my oil cooler and I am waiting for it to return.

UPDATE:

This stupid car is fighting me every step of the way. After replacing the leaky water pump, I had issues with intake cam timing which led me to pull the head just to make sure the valves were OK. Head is back on, BUT I got angry today and beat the crap out of my intake cam gear, breaking off a section of teeth. New MIVEC cam gear is on order and will be here to the tune of $285.

Also, I picked up a 75mm throttle body and a intake manifold for a really good deal. Today, the IM came back from being cleaned and powder coated to match the valve cover.

ScrapinSi
07-28-2009, 02:59 PM
he had quite a few problems... First there was an assembly issue, then there was a cylinder head issue, then there was another cylinder head issue, then I believe an oil problem, and the most recent issue was that the car was started to move, and the timing belt slipped...
