View Full Version : I really want a bike...

Ok so I really want a bike and if gas keeps jumping $0.20/day, then I will definately get one. I am thinking, if I am smart I will, get an EX500 Kawasaki Ninja, because I have never had a bike nor driven one before. The EX500 (new or used) is a really good beginner bike but is very boring and has no style at all. I am also thinking the new flat blue Kawasaki 636 Ninja would be awesome, but I don't know if it will be too much bike for me. The 636's are bad ass bikes and are pretty powerful for a 6. Other than that, possibly a used 600 bike might be the way to go, it will be cheaper, and I will probably not care about messing it up (but messing it up, might mean messing me up). So what do you fools think? I will not be an assclown on a bike because I know all too well how dangerous they can be, so that is out of the equation. Which one would be the best choice, I think the EX500 would be but they are just not that cool of a bike.

Well I know what I want, and it is a lot of things. But I am looking at this from a gas saving perspective.
Cobra Turbo Kit > Bike.
true but turbo (single is the way I will go, less stuff to go wrong) charging it will only kill my horrible gas mileage more:D . The bike will be quick and get great gas mileage and cost much less to fill up.

Ok, you are going to try and justify a bike for fuel savings. First off, that is very difficult to do. Compared to the Cobra? Yeah, Ok, in a general sense, it's more fuel efficient. However, tires, chains, sprockets, brakes, insurance, and motorcycle gear need to be added to the cost of ownership as well. Some of these, depending on your habits, much more often than one might think. Also, you will surely be smart enough to avoid the roads when it's raining. Count the whole month of April as a write-off. Maybe May. Then there is October through March. No gas savings there either. I'm generalizing because I'm also including days when you have to carry something (anything), as well as days you just don't want to ride (don't want to be too stinky for a meeting or lunch rendezvous). So, justifying on fuel savings is tough. The price of the bike has to be included, but as long as you don't jump it into the Thames, it should depreciate slowly if it's 5 years or older...so you can sell it later to recoup your costs. That said, I hope the math works out.
The EX500 is not a slow bike. It is not much of a race bike any more these days either, but when introduced in the 1980's, it was considered a hot machine. It was updated slightly in the mid '90's. Price and style went up accordingly. Within the last few model years, Kawasaki started including the lower fairing, which helps with highway-speed aerodynamics. Anyway, it's not the smoothest parralel-twin on the market, but it is one of the best tuned out there. It really does move out pretty good.
Now, time for some stump time...
This is a really good first bike. Anything bigger is a recipe for disaster. The power is sufficient to get you out of trouble and the geometry is conservative enough to keep you out of trouble. There are a couple other bikes that are worth considering including the Honda Hawk NT650, the Honda CB-1, and others. I really appreciate your approach to safety here. the best thing you can do is sign up for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course in your area.

Having fun, doing something unusual, saving some money, and staying safe are all things to weigh. I think your attitude is right, and you will have so much fun on any bike you buy, that it will not matter at the end of the day which machine you choose.
I have a lot of information on what to look for when buying a used motorcycle and a bunch of other advice. I would be happy to discuss motorcycling with you any time. I have been riding motorcycles since I was five years old (that was back in the 1970's by the way) and have owned many motorcycles and have ridden hundreds of them. I even have motorcycle brochures for any bike you might consider buying. Send me a PM, or just be there for coffee any night.

Ok, well like I said before, one of my best friends, I have known him for over 20 years, owns the bike shop I will be buying eveything at, I know for a fact I can get everything I need at cost, helmets, gloves, jackets, etc. I will definately take the course, that is not an issue, it has to be done. Ins. will not be too bad, I don't think, I know the guy that i will be getting my ins through and he has gotten me great prices on cars. I know a bike is different but I think it will be alright. Believe me the Cobra sucks down 93 like it is going out of style. 180 miles per tank is the norm, not good.
My commute is 14 minutes to work. I never have any meetings so no need to worry about being stinky. I have always wanted to get a bike, so this is a prime time, plus driving the Cobra again is killing my knee, the bike will be much easier on the knee, i believe.

If you want a fuel saver, go with a four banger. My Crx gets close to 40 mpg. For bikes, you should make sure you want to ride and know how to ride before buying a bike. I started riding on a Honda 100 dirt bike and loved it. Now im looking into the new Yamaha's and thinking about getting one of those. They look sweet and are plenty fast.

I wouldn't bother with the ex. You will get tired of it real quik. I would suggest a 600 the is about four or five years old. Or you can buy my R1,j/k
Even a older 750 like a zx7 will put a big smile on your face. Don't listen to nasa_tuner. You will save money with the bike. You don't go through those things he listed that fast. I only don't ride my bike dec.-march and thats only because I usually can't get it out of the basement to the drive way when the yard is muddy. Plenty of great deals out there. But don't just get one to have one. Make up your mind and tkae time to find the right one

Your first post on the Tuner Network forum is advice for someone to ignore the advice of the NASA engineer?
Beware...sarcasm...
I only know one thing for sure: you are a genius.
Don't listen to nasa_tuner. You will save money with the bike. You don't go through those things he listed that fast.
Lets see, Nasa posts a thought out report including 30 years of riding experience, and you post 0 points pertaining to your information. Gee, I wonder who I'd listen to.
I personally owned a Suzuki RM250 and managed to spend more money on gas, oil, chains, sprockets and tires in 1 summer than I spent on my 4-banger cavalier in the whole year. Saving money depends entirely on riding style and your commitment to overcome the urge for "fun time" on the bike. If anyone picks up a bike and spends their weekends out joy riding where they would otherwise be drinking beers by the BBQ, the money saved on the commute in the previous week has been negated. Fun levels may increase, but nothing will happen with any regard to saving money.
I only don't ride my bike dec.-march and thats only because I usually can't get it out of the basement to the drive way when the yard is muddy.
I don't know what kind of yard you have, but usually my yard is fairly solid in December, January and February when the average temperature is near freezing. Along with most of March.

I love bikes...have had several in the past, but I'm gonna sound like your old man and tell you DON'T DO IT!!! Nasa Tuner brings up some valid points but bottom line is it's just too dangerous these days, around these roads. If you really want one then get a dirt bike and tear ass accross some fields or something. :moped:

You are a sad strange little man...and you have my pity.
Without ANY information in your profile...how can TN as a whole, possibly try to validate anything you just said. You can't honestly make yer first post...OF ALL TIME...stating that Juice33 shouldn't listen to NASA_Tuner...someone...who, probably 90% of TN asks for advice in one area or another. How are we to know anything about you? I could say "Or you could just buy my 999R j/k"...and when someone went to my profile, they'd know I'm full of shit.

Well, when it comes to bikes, I am pretty sure I will be a pussy on one. I just want one for the fun of driving and gaining a different driving experience, as well possibly keeping costs down and miles off of the Cobra. My first bike will most likely be a used EX500, I know it will "get boring" but I don't plan on keeping the bike for anymore than one season. I will buy used and sell used. Believe me, I will be scared shitless on a bike, so no stunts or balls out driving. Hell I don't even step all the way into Mustang and that is a lof safer than a bike.

Its not that riding a bike is unsafe, its the other people on the road that scare the shit out of me. Im scared when i drive my car about the other drivers. I love bikes, ever sence my ex got me on one. Im not looking to save money on gas or anything, i just want a bike because there fun.

I am not trying to validate anything to the whole board just juice. I don't really care if I upset the nasa man either. It was sarcasm by saying don't listen to him. Didn't realize you guys were so sensitive. What's going to my profile got to do with anything? I know a little about bikes. The buy my R1 (for a first bike) was a joke.
Stew....... Generally there would have to be snow or if it gets nice for a few days and the grounds thaws. The top layer of your yard gets pretty slick when it is still frozen a few inches down. Kinda makes it hard to push it or ride it up hill when it is slick.

My dad had been riding for almost 30 years until the day he died on his Harley... :( He was on the highway and flew off the road into a gard rail at 50+... He was only 46. If you get one, be careful. It could be your fault, another drivers, something in the road, or a malfunction, it doesn't matter when you go down, you dont have 3,000 lbs of metal surrounding you...

Riding is dangerous, I know. But I gaurantee I will ride like the biggest pussy you know. I will be as careful as possible, but that isn't always enough. I will wear full gear and ride slow. That is just terrible what happened to your father tommy, I will do my best to be as careful as possible.

It's not that we are overly sensitive, it's that some of us post informed, calculated, useful information, not post-whore drivel.
Maybe you should get to know people, such that your sarcasm is understood, before you try to play it off like it's no big deal. Establishing trust should be one of your priorities. Without it, you will just get ignored as "that guy". Don't be that guy.
The topic of motorcycles is very near and dear to some of us, and your flippant attitude will surely land you in trouble with those of us that actually care.
Update your profile so we know what we are dealing with.

Baer,
Don't worry about it. Everyone loves me here :grouphug: lol. they just don't want to see me be a retard too quickly because everyone knows I can do some of the dumbest things. :mrt:
On a serious note, no one wants anyone around here kicking the bucket way before their time :tombstone That would suck for anyone and everyone as I am sure most of us know someone or are associated with someone who died on a bike.

Yeah that's my friend Eric. I already lost 2 friends on bikes. I think you should get a moped. It's gas friendly, safe, well safer. And you can take a nice slow cruise where ever you want. Or you can just by a bicycle and that is so gas friendly you wouldn't have to spend anything and get alot of exercise too. lol
